A Christmas Wish

Brass Quartet, SATB Choir, Sleigh Bells, Organ

Words based on a Christmas poem by Dave Dogterom. The vocal range is fine for most church choirs, and the brass parts are also fairly easy. If you have a Christmas gig for brass quintet, your horn player can take a break and play sleigh bells!

A Duet a Day

Trumpet and Trombone

These fun duets are intended for kids with 3 years of playing experience. They make a nice Christmas present for that young brass player in the family! Includes Lazy Sunday, Monday Blues, Triplet Tuesday, Off Beat Wednesday, Rockin' Thursday, Fanfare Friday, and Saturday Hoedown.

A Far-flung Corner of the Galaxy

Brass Quintet

The intent was to write something modal, and the piece ended up sounding a bit like Vaughan Williams. All instruments need straight mutes, and trumpets also need cups. Range is generally moderate except for a few high notes here and there, especially at the end for Trumpet 1. The tuba solo will give your performer a fingering workout!

  5. An Eagle's Tale

Covid Chorale *

Brass Ensemble

Performed in 2021 by the Tarnished Brass, Australia

Brad wrote this music during the pandemic hoping it might bring some peace to medical professionals and their patients fighting this terrible disease. The piece is for a 10-piece brass ensemble consisting of two trumpets (Bb), flugelhorn, two horns, two trombones, bass trombone, euphonium, and tuba.

Don't Fret It *

Violin and Trombone

Performed several times in 2021 during the Victoria Symphony/Pacific Opera Victoria's Open Air Summer Festival

Don't Fret It begins with a swing section, then transitions into a virtuosic dance. The dance ends with a bang, but is immediately followed by a section of creepy "dark forest" music. The piece ultimately ends with peace and tranquility, achieved with double stop harmonies from the violin.

Excursion for Brass

Brass Quintet

An early attempt at composition by Brad…

Find My Keys

Flute and Piano

Brad wrote this piece for his lovely wife Michelle, who is an excellent flute player. It was read through with a pianist to make sure it works, but  hasn't been performed live yet. There are some rhythmic challenges so it would take a bit of rehearsal. Also a few high notes that most players should be able to pop out.

Four By Four

Trombone/Euphonium and Piano

A piece suitable for recital or concert performances, with range from low E to high B, and an optional high D in the last bar. Parts are provided in bass clef or Bb treble. Euphonium players should omit the glissandi!

Interlude *

String Orchestra

Rehearsed and recorded by the Victoria Symphony during its 2024 Hugh Davidson Composer Readings

There were three goals in mind while writing this piece: use and develop some motives, move from darkness to light, and make the ending beautiful. There is some poly-tonality here and there, but empty measures give the music time to breathe, while pop music influences help ease the tension.

Island Fugue

String Quartet

An experiment that hasn't been tested yet or performed…

March Fantasy

Low Brass Quartet or Choir

Written for a standard band or orchestra low brass section, this piece also sounds excellent with all parts doubled. An opening fanfare leads into a toe-tapping march, followed by a fugue reminiscent of Bach, a tuba recitative and solo, a recap of the march, and a majestic finale.

Overture to The Dark Tower *

Full Orchestra

Rehearsed and recorded by the Victoria Symphony during its 2025 Hugh Davidson Composer Readings

In the summer of 2024 Brad reread all seven books of the Dark Tower series by Stephen King, then decided to compose a piece based on impressions of some of the events and locations in the books. It's not an "overture" in the sense of an introduction to a ballet, opera, or oratorio, but rather an independent concert overture, as began to appear in the early 19th century.

Points of View

Trombone Quartet

An early attempt at composition by Brad…

Seagulls Rising *

Woodwind Trio

Performed in a senior's home in Victoria, BC

Seagulls make an amazingly wide variety of sounds, which this piece for clarinet, flute, and oboe tries to capture. Professional woodwind players were consulted to determine if the effects worked. Some of the oboe writing is a bit low, and might be better played slurred. While writing a single seagull was often spotted perched on top of a neighbour's house - hence the quote from the popular Christmas tune.

Seraphina Sextet *

Flute Sextet

Performed in 2020 and 2025 by the Victoria High Notes Flute Choir during "Canada Music Week Flute Spectacular"

Seraphina Sextet tells the tale of a frisky feline, from playful youth to the tragic accident that took her life. Although she met a sad demise, the music ends with a note of peace and joy as Seraphina begins the next stage of her journey. Instrumentation is Four Flutes, Alto Flute, and Bass Flute.

Slides and Legends

Bass Trombone and Piano

An opening of icy coldness moves into a more cheerful passage that builds in excitement until some epic low notes. Suddenly, a distant chorale is heard on the piano. Bass Trombone takes over with an improvisatory passage leading to a primordial pedal F, followed by an echo of the chorale. The cheerful music returns, at first a bit tentative, then picking up steam into a virtuosic Allegro that takes it to the end, with a few surprises and tongue-in-cheek moments along the way.

Slides and Legends is playable on a single-valve bass trombone (F attachment). A performance is in the works for the very near future.

Takaya's Epic Journey

Chamber Orchestra and Narrator

Takaya's Epic Journey was inspired by the CBC documentary Takaya: Lone Wolf, which told the story of a wolf that managed to survive and thrive for seven years living on Discovery and Chatham Islands, just offshore from Victoria, BC Canada (a major urban centre). It imagined what his journey to the islands may have been like - including iconic Vancouver Island wildlife he may have met on the way - and depicted his relocation to Port Renfrew and subsequent death at the hands of a hunter.

There were hopes for a performance, but sadly they never materialized.

Three Linden Lieder *

Low Brass or Trombone Quartet

This early composition by Brad included Fanfare, Elegy and Hiking Song - three little ditties that work well for outdoor, summer concerts.

Hiking Song has been performed on many occasions by the Victoria Symphony low brass section

Triple Play

String Quartet

Triple Play has been read through by professional players, but no known performances yet. There are three movements entitled Seraphina, Two Theme Dance, and Four Gone Conclusion.

Trombones To Go *

Low Brass or Trombone Quartet

Our low brass ensemble decided to stop playing Lassus Trombone after learning how racist it is. We needed another humorous piece to demonstrate the trombone glissando, so Brad wrote one!

Trombones To Go has been performed on numerous occasions by the Victoria Symphony low brass section. It was also performed by the Sooke Philarmonic low brass during their “Philharmonic Fling” concert on July 6, 2025.

Trombone To Go *

Brass Quintet

Performed in 2021 by the Victoria Symphony Brass Quintet

Trombone To Go *

Flute, Violin, Trombone

Performed in 2021 several times by the Tapioca Trio, during the Victoria Symphony/Pacific Opera Victoria's Open Air Summer Festival
